January: More to the Story of Jonah

Jesus taught His followers about the sign of Jonah. You can read His teachings in these verses: Matthew 12:40–41 and Luke 11:29–30, 32.

The story of Jonah became a sign that Jesus is Lord. How? Jonah spent three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish. Jesus spent three days and three nights in the grave. Jonah was a sign from God to the people of Nineveh. The Son of Man (Jesus) would be a sign from God to the people of Jesus’ day (meaning the contemporary time when Jesus came to earth). Jonah preached to others to turn away from their sins. Jesus had a message even more important than Jonah’s. He wanted us to know the story of Jonah.

This story has been part of an important tradition. In the early Church, the story of Jonah was captured in beautiful artwork. These serve as reminders that the Lord promises deliverance.

Check out this early Christian artwork depicting Jonah and the huge fish:

January: Cooperative Program

The Cooperative Program enables all Southern Baptist churches to do more together. This giving plan allows churches to give a percentage of their budgets to support missions in their states and across the nation. Ministries like One More Child (the international ministries of Florida Baptist Children’s Homes) are supported through the Cooperative Program. Whenever you tithe to your church, you are supporting the work of Jerry Haag.

Dear children,

Thank you so much for learning about missions, praying about missions, giving to missions, and participating in the work of the church. Because you are involved, you are already supporting what I do through One More Child. Let me tell you how it works.

When families in your church tithe (weekly or monthly), your church collects all those tithes and gives a small percentage of that amount to the Cooperative Program. All Southern Baptist churches throughout the United States do the same. The Cooperative Program sends support to ministries in your state and other states—ministries like One More Child!

All of our churches are doing something together that is much greater than any one family or one church could do on its own. One More Child depends on the Cooperative Program for 4 percent of our budget. These dollars are important to the work we do. It helps us take care of children. Your tithe—no matter how big or small—is helping children every day.

I hope you have enjoyed hearing the stories of how God is at work in our ministry.

Dr. Jerry Haag

Research the percentage your church contributes to the Cooperative Program. Look at your church’s operating budget to see the amount given all year.

Pray over the future budget of your church. Pray for the Cooperative Program. Thank God for the opportunities He gives us to be part of the work He is doing all around the world.

January: RA Outdoor Retreat

Dr. Jerry Haag remembers being an RA. He remembers all the fun activities he participated in. He remembers the Scripture verses he memorized. But he says, “Most of all, I remember the outstanding men who invested in my life and taught me about compassion.”

Plan an outdoor retreat for RAs, fathers, and men in your church. Offer hiking or fishing activities for an afternoon or turn it into an overnight campout. Play games. Cook chili and s’mores. Find ways to make memories for your RAs that will last a lifetime and inspire them to spend time with the next generation of RAs when they are grown.
