And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you except to fear the Lord your God by walking in all of his ways, to love him, and to worship the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul? Keep the Lord’s commands and statutes I am giving you today, for your own good.
(Deuteronomy 10:12–13, CSB)

Are you a list maker? Do you sit down on Sunday evening or Monday morning and write down all the tasks you need to complete in the coming week?

Or, are you just too busy to even make a list? Is your life so out of control you don’t have enough time or paper to write it all down? If so, today’s scripture is for you. Verses 12–13 summarize steps to simplify your life:

  • Fear the Lord.
  • Walk in obedience to Him.
  • Love Him.
  • Serve Him.
  • Keep His commands.

You are probably thinking, “You don’t know how much is on my to-do list! I can’t possibly whittle down everything I have to do into these five steps!” Our Father is not calling you to abandon your responsibilities or to ignore your family. He is providing parameters in which you can accomplish your tasks. Never lose sight of these in the midst of your busy life.

Dear Father, we can’t even imagine the to-do lists of pastors and missionaries throughout the world. The live with an unending litany of requests, needs, and responsibilities—some from their faith families, some from their communities, and some self-imposed. Please gently remind them today that You only ask of them to fear You, to walk in obedience to You, to love you, to serve you, and to keep Your commands. Help them prioritize and gain perspective. Help them to work within Your parameters. We pray for strength for the exhausted, encouragement for the discouraged, and guidance for those who have lost their way. We praise Your name. Amen.
