All for You—Surrender, Sacrifice, Serve

Follow Me

In the world of social media you can like, comment, share, repin, or retweet the people whom you follow. To follow someone takes on a whole new meaning in social media. When you follow a person or become a friend, it means you keep up with that person. Their posts come into your newsfeed, and you can see what the person has been up to. Sometimes it is mundane day-to-day happenings, such as a photo of a plate of their food at a restaurant. Other times you learn exciting news about the person you follow, like where they are on vacation or the arrival of a new baby.

Jesus invited people to follow Him many times in the Scriptures. When Peter and Andrew were fishing, Jesus said, “Come, follow me” (Matt. 4:19). He also said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matt. 11:28). From John 7:37–38, Jesus said, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12). From the WMU emphasis verse of Mark 8:34, Jesus said, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” These are only a few examples of the times when Jesus called others to come to him and follow Him.

Following Jesus means more than merely keeping track of Him or knowing what He did in His life. To follow Him, we must believe in Him, place our trust in Him, and seek to live like Him. Following Jesus means having a servant heart and sharing His light with others. In teaching Mission Friends we follow Him by seeking to be like Him in the way we care for preschoolers, love them, pray for them, and serve them. We have the gospels to help us know who Jesus is and how He lived his life here in our world. He still calls us to follow Him every day.

Prayer: Dear God, Thank You for the Scriptures that tell us Who Jesus is and how we are to live our lives like Him. Help me to follow Jesus in all I do, especially this month as I teach Mission Friends. Thank You that You call me to come, follow You.
