Step Out and Shine

Step out and Shine

“Arise, shine for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you. See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples; but the Lord rises upon you and His glory appears over you” (Isa. 60:1–2 NIV1)

What a beautiful prophecy of the coming of our Lord. As we continue pondering how to step out into our world, we must immediately turn our thoughts to Jesus, our Light, who stepped from the ethereal beauty and safety of His heavenly kingdom to bring hope and life into a world overcome by darkness and fear. He stepped out boldly and with great love for his people.

During this Christmas season, spend time meditating on His willingness to step out for us. But, don’t stop there. Meditate, too, on His command that we are to “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in Heaven” (Matt. 5:16 NIV).

Allow Christ’s words to spur you to acts of compassion and service.

How is He calling you step out into the world? Do you have neighbors who need to know Him? Invite them for dinner and share His story. Do you have shelters who need volunteers? Sign up for times of service. Do you live near a domestic violence recovery center? Spend time with domestic violence victims to show them they are worthy of love. Does a local skilled care facility have residents who have no visitors? Visit with these seniors so they know they are not forgotten. Do you have a homeless population? Look into their eyes and feed or clothe them. Are there college students in your area who are away from family? Introduce them to the family of Christ.

Paul said, “I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. I do this for the sake of the gospel that I may share in its blessings” (1 Cor. 9:22–23). Celebrate Christ’s birth by asking Him how He desires you to become all things to all people. And then, step out!

Dear Father, Thank You for humbling Yourself and stepping into this world. Thank You that You tell us that we are precious to You, that we are Your special possession. Thank You for calling us out of darkness into Your marvelous light. Please give us courage to arise and shine, to step out into the world and share Your light with those who so desperately need Your hope and grace. Amen.
