Because of Who He Is, Let’s Make Time to Pray

Christmas. It’s the most joyful, but also most jam-packed, holiday of the year. This season, join with me in choosing to make time to pray. The Week of Prayer for International Missions Prayer Brochure is our resource for praying specifically, thoughtfully, and intentionally. How about it? It’s Jesus’ birthday! Because of Who He is, why not give Him the gift of time?

If you’re in, here are some suggestions:

Let’s Decorate!

Gather the children and the craft supplies. Create ornaments for each day highlighted in the prayer brochure. Hang the ornaments on a small tabletop tree. Each day, move one ornament to your family tree, asking God to draw people from that place to Himself and bring them into His family through faith in Jesus. Let the empty tree prompt prayer that every nation would hear the good news. Because of Who He is, pray that the good news “will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come” (Matt. 24:14).

Let’s Have Lunch!

Partner up with a friend and schedule 7 lunch dates during the holiday season. Meet at an ethnic restaurant that lines up with each day of the prayer brochure. Because of Who He is, transform lunchtime into prayertime as you discuss and intercede for the people highlighted that day. Be sure to ask your server how you can pray for him or her, too.

Let’s Gather for a Potluck!

Invite members of your small group for a Christmas potluck. Encourage each member to bring a dish honoring one of the people groups highlighted in the prayer brochure. Because of Who He is, break bread and then break out in prayer for the nations. Ask God to bring the love of Christ to those who need to know Him this Christmas. Pray that those who are hungry would find satisfaction in Jesus, “the bread of life” (John 6:48).

Let’s Make Praying a Habit!

Incorporate the prayer brochure into your daily rhythm. Tape the brochure to your bathroom mirror and pray as you brush your teeth, morning and night. Keep it by your coffee pot, prompting you to pray with your morning java. Set the alarm on your phone for 3:16 p.m. Because of Who He is, let each daily beep prompt you to stop and pray that people in these highlighted areas would hear the gospel. Pray they would respond to the truth: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).

Christmas is full of many good things—fun, food, family. But all those good things can distract us from the main thing: remembering and celebrating that Jesus came. In the midst of making your list and crossing it off, in the frenzy of too-much-to-do-and-not-enough-time-to-do-it-in, ask the Holy Spirit to prompt you to stop and pray because of Who He is.
