Are Summer Camps Still Relevant Today?

We live in a world where technology is integrated into just about every aspect of our lives. Self-driving cars, microwaves, phones with computers in them (or is it the other way around?) and even electric toothbrushes! And yet, every summer, thousands of children and their leaders flock to summer camps all over the country. How can this be? No WiFi? No phones? Say it isn’t so!

We all know how beneficial it is to unplug for a while, don’t we? There’s something about leaving your day-to-day life behind in search of something wild and new. Adults know this, and kids certainly enjoy a little adventure now and then! But camp is so much more valuable than a weekend vacation in the woods. Going to camp provides an atmosphere for learning and change. Think about it: you are transported from a world entirely under your command to one where you are at the mercy of the elements. You are not in control, and maybe that’s a good thing. When we are stripped of our handheld distractions, we can take time to really see the world around us. We see things in ourselves that we usually don’t have to confront because we cover it up with videos and music blaring 24/7. When we have nothing left to distract us, we have the most to learn.

Camp was always a meaningful experience for me. Whether it was burning my eyebrows off during a campfire competition or listening to a missionary share about his recovery from a devastating car accident, these experiences would go on to shape the man I am today (don’t worry, the eyebrows grew back). If you are looking for a way to reach your children’s missions group in your church, here’s a hint . . . take them outside.
