How Children Can Come to Christ Through Missions Organizations

Many of the children that come to our church on Wednesday nights do not go to any church on Sundays. Our Wednesday night program might be the only time these children hear the gospel. We reach out to their families, but some of the parents will not come. How do we tell these children about Jesus while telling them about the missionaries, teaching them the lesson, and working on different projects?

Here are a few suggestions I have used.

  • First of all, be certain to use "Becoming a Christian" in GA World and RA World. Depending on the age of the group, expand it and address questions children may have. Do this at least once a month, or give some other form of a salvation message.
  • Focus on why the missionaries do what they do. They share Jesus in another culture because they love the Lord with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength. They have a personal relationship with Jesus and want to tell others about Him. Talk about the missionary kids and how they want to help their parents because of the love relationship they have with Jesus.
  • Continue to discuss the first week’s Bible story throughout the month. All Bible stories point to Jesus.
  • Use other resources to help teach children about Jesus and the relationship He wants with each one of us. Sometimes, add another Bible story that also addresses the theme of the month.
  • Each week children have questions about the lesson. Pray for wisdom and discernment in order to best answer these questions that could help a child become a Christian or grow closer to Christ.

Once children make decisions, be sure to follow up with them and make visits to their homes to talk to their parents. I give each child a workbook on what it means to be a Christian—and sometimes give a devotional book. I encourage the parents to work with the children through the workbook, but I also follow up with the child and parents.

Anytime is a great time to share the gospel with both children who come to church regularly and those who might only come on Wednesday nights to play in the gym and get a free meal. In this way, all children are able to hear about the love of Jesus.
