By All Means

By All Means

Our first session of Mission Friends® for the new church year started in a most exciting way. We had a big group of preschoolers coming up into our class of 3- and 4-year-olds. The first session is usually a little more hectic because the preschoolers don’t know the schedule, and you are trying to figure out preschoolers’ names. I expected to have 8 or 9 preschoolers, but we had 13! I had planned the painting activity suggested in Mission Friends Leader for the session, and it took a while for the preschoolers to take turns in sets of 2 or 3 preschoolers at a time. When we finally gathered for Group Time, the power went out in the whole church! We spent the remainder of our session in the dark, using the flashlights from our smartphones.

One of our new preschoolers is a petite little girl who is Asian, and her heart language is not English. Since our preschoolers come to Mission Friends from Preschool Choir, I had not had a chance to talk with her parents yet. All I knew was her name. I could tell that she did not understand everything we said, but she did well in following the other preschoolers in the interest areas and at Group Time. When her mother came to pick her up, I found out that they live in my condominium complex near the church. In our brief conversation in the dark, I told the mother I would look for them when I am out walking.

God has literally placed someone outside my door with whom I can share my faith. All I have to do is step outside and walk down the street a few steps. I do not know where this young mother is spiritually, but I know the family is new in our country and she was so excited to find that I live nearby. Could it be that God is nudging me to step into the world around me to share His love?

Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 9:22–23: “I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. I do this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.” We are encouraged to use all possible means to bring others to Christ. In order to share our faith with others, we have to step into the world around us. God will place people in your path with whom you can share His good news. It may be the other parent at the soccer field, the person you see each week at the market, or the new neighbor down the street. As you step into the world around you, is there someone with whom God is nudging you to share His love?

Pray: Father, Open my eyes to the people around me who need to hear of Christ’s love. Nudge me when the opportunities come to share my faith in You. Help me to step into the world around me, even when those steps are simply down my street.
