Summer Plans

Summer . . . plans. Really? Isn’t that an oxymoron? Summer is not supposed to be about plans. It’s about not having to have a plan! Or at least I used to think so. I guess summer as a grown-up isn’t always quite that free. I remember the feeling of getting out of the last day of school without a care in the world. I had nothing to do and no expectations—just rest, TV, making up games in the yard, or spending time with my grandparents. It was awesome, for a while. It didn’t take long to find out that there were still household chores to do, some expectations of others, and, in the South, a humid heat that drains your energy. Oh, and boredom, sunburns, and mosquitos.

I didn’t make plans back then but I’m pretty sure someone was making them. Summers are pretty awesome, but maybe having a plan isn’t such a bad idea after all.

When it comes to plans, I guess you could say that I have a love/hate relationship with them. I actually do love making plans but hate it when they don’t work out. What about you? As a leader, do you enjoy making plans? Or are you more likely to let others make them for you?

Recently I have been thinking more about God’s amazing plans: Jeremiah 29:11; Psalm 139; Ephesians 2:8–10 and 3:20–21; and even Revelation 21–22. What if leading is simply following God’s plans and helping others to do the same? God’s creativity, sovereignty, compassion, and forgiveness, interact with our thoughts, feelings, and actions in ways that are far beyond our understanding. He has plans. For our best life possible, we can follow Him. And He has plans for summers—even for this summer.

What is on God’s heart for us in myMISSION this summer? Groups in myMISSION focus on faith, community, and missions. These are clearly priorities God has for each of us. He has plans for us to grow in faith, community, and missions. What would that look like for you?

Our group had a taco party last month and talked about the summer. For June, we will grow in faith by each reading a different book and sharing. For July, we are planning to visit one of our friends who just had a beautiful baby boy. And for August we are praying about a missions project we could do together. Probably the most exciting thing is that we are sharing more and more of life together naturally in between meetings. Just this week, I had a presentation to make that I was nervous about. My group prayed for me and helped me decide what to wear—what are girlfriends for?!

I love the fact that God has plans but we discover them together, one step at a time. I’m praying for all of us as leaders that we can find that balance of seeking God’s plans as we make our own decisions, even about how we spend our summer. May God grow us this summer in faith, community, and missions. May we be just a little more like Jesus, be a little closer to each other, and change our world even if it is a little bit at a time. How’s that for a summer plan?

Write me at LHarper@wmu.org and share your summer plan. Maybe next month I could share your story! Thank you for all you are doing leading others in myMISSION to find God’s plans. More soon . . .
