The Amity Summer English Program (SEP) is a three-week, intensive oral English program conducted by teams of four to six volunteers throughout central and western China. The students in these programs are Chinese English teachers, who need opportunities to speak English with the volunteers and with their peers

*For detailed information, including application and costs, on Amity's Summer English Program, go to their Web site, www.amityfoundation.org

*Costs: $2,500 estimate (airfare and in-country costs)

English is a great need in China. Children, students, and adults seek opportunities to learn and improve their English-speaking skills. However, not everyone has easy access to these opportunities. For example, those who are underprivileged may not have the chance to learn English.

Adult Teams are needed during the school year to work in migrant schools, which are primary schools in Nanjing for children of workers from rural areas who come to the city to look for jobs. The work would consist of giving underprivileged elementary school children opportunities to sing, play games, and to participate in English activities.

    *Dates: October 17–29, 2008

*This team will spend five days in the classroom. Some afternoons and evenings will include dialogue with Chinese college students. The team will also spend one evening of conversational English with students in the national seminary. The team will tour Amity Printing Company, where 40 million (and counting at 3 or 4 million a year) Bibles have been printed for China. They will visit with the Amity staff at their Nanjing headquarters. Additional travel includes visiting the Forbidden City and the Great Wall of China.

    *Cost: Approximately $2,500

College and older high school students are needed to work with the Xi'an YMCA, for making friends and exchanging views on school, family, sports, hobbies, and life. Students also will have the chance to visit a village, visit in homes, and to make Chinese dumplings, as well as to see historical sights in this ancient Chinese capital, such as the terracotta warriors.

    *Dates: Summer

*Length of Service: About ten days

*Costs: $35/person per day plus airfare

Adult or college teams are needed to help with the Xi'an YMCA's work in a rural elementary school, giving children the opportunity to sing, play games, and to participate in English activities.

*Dates: Flexible, but autumn and spring are the best seasons for weather in China. Spring break is a possibility for collegiates.

*Length of Service: About ten days, with five days in the classroom.

*Cost: $35/person per day, plus airfare

Collegiate teams are needed for culture exchange/dialogue with Chinese college students in Nanjing, giving Chinese college students the opportunity to make friends with American college students, using English conversation while shopping, sightseeing, and sharing daily activities.

*Dates: Spring break or late May

*Length of Service: About ten days, with five days in the classroom

*Cost: $30/person per day, plus airfare to Nanjing
