LIVE THE CALL: BEYOND THE WALLS

It's Monday morning. A woman stays at home with her two preschoolers. She needs additional income, but she cannot afford child care, even if she works. Meanwhile, the local church opens the building for their daily child-care program.

It's Wednesday evening. In the house on the corner, an older woman sits at the kitchen table eating dog food because she had to spend extra money on medication. Meanwhile, the church down the street is meeting for their weekly Wednesday night supper.

It's Thursday afternoon. A man walks into his apartment and tells his family he has lost his job. Because the car was not working, he did not make it to work on time. They live in a rural area where public transportation is not available. Meanwhile, a mechanic prepares to meet at the church for deacon's meeting.

"If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth" (1 John 3:17-18 NIV).

How do I live the call to those in poverty?

What is Project HELPSM: Poverty?
Project HELP is a call to action! Through Project HELP: Poverty, WMU® seeks to lead Christian believers to share the hope of Christ by engaging in a face-to-face ministry with people experiencing poverty.

How do you define poverty?
Poverty is the condition of a person lacking financial resources to provide for adequate diet, housing, clothing, health care, or transportation for themselves or their family.

What if I don't know anyone who lives in poverty?
Sometimes poverty is easy to spot. Many times, though, poverty is hidden behind casual conversation and our own busyness. We don't take the time to see it. We don't ask.

What can I do about an issue as big as poverty?
More than likely, you are already doing it! Many of the gifts we use every day can be used to assist someone experiencing poverty. Many of our church programs are already designed to help people. The task becomes finding those people.

We invite you to join us in our call to action against poverty. Please review the materials on this Web site to get involved in your community. Feel free to contact us with questions.
