2011 Focus: London

A few minutes on a city street is proof of the multicultural feel of London today. Muslim women wearing hijabs, Sikh men wearing turbans, Eastern Europeans, South Asians, North Africans, Somalis, Iranians, and Iraqis mix in a jumble of languages, cultures, and lifestyles. New York Magazine likened London to the New York City of the early 1900s during its great age of immigration.

This city of 8.5 million has become a “multilingual capital” with inhabitants speaking 300 different languages. More than 30 percent of all London school children speak a language other than English at home, and a diversity of religions pervades the city streets. Mosques as well as Hindu and Sikh temples dot the cityscape where once only Christian churches stood.

Have you ever been the first at something? Have you ever been the first to hear good news? Were you the first WMU director in your church?

Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist, was the first to know that God’s plan to send the Messiah was now being set into motion. Can you imagine what that would have been like? The Hebrews had waited for so long for God to act and now the time had come. The priest Zechariah was blessed indeed. Just imagine.
